Please Gloria

The Bible says: those who live in the dark will never see the light. I believe na ang isang taong binabalutan ng kasuwapangan will never see the light. They go to church announced with photos published so people will see them as good and holy. But there really is what's called karma and this is what will put them in a place that’s right for them and their matching evil deeds... eventually...someday. It usually comes as a surprise and can be unbearable, and it will teach them to be humble. I say these things because of what I’ve read today on the internet about Gloria Arroyo, our supposed to be exiting presidente. Yes, her end is very near and can’t hardly wait too. But, and it’s a big but, but, but, what they’re saying is that she continue to travel and spends like crazy. I’m just saying what they have been saying, and if at all true, then I join everybody in saying, "please Gloria, stop! please leave!"

(Dindo Matining/Rose Miranda, Abante Online, April 17, 2010)

Politics and election sucks

It's election time in the Philippines right now. May 10 is the day to cast votes. I’ve never voted in the Philippines. E kasi naman martial law at that time. Nang ibalik ang demokrasya which opened all doors in politics, nandito na ako sa tate. At that time, wala talaga akong hilig sa politics. This time, I feel the need to be involved. Kasi it’s really been a long time na wala tayong asenso. Corruptions have gotten worst – evil and worst. No matter what they say that we shouldn’t believe everything we see in the news, I believe those pictures never lie unless doctored. We need to change, and change can only happen if we can vote for someone very honest, incorruptible, and will fight corruptions. I do believe poverty was caused by corruptions.

Pro-poor is wasting billions

It's a common knowledge that Villar is spending billions to promote himself as pro-poor but this does not only confuses me, it also makes me feel so dumb. In my opinion, this is obviously more of his own personal desire to win the presidency and he's doing it at all costs. To think that it's for the desire to serve the poor is stupid. If his only intention is to serve the poor, then for crying out loud, the billions would have been a great start-up funds, don't you think? What do you think the first thing he'll do once he becomes president? I'm afraid to know.

This post "The servant, the leader and the servant-leader" from House On A Hill makes good points and lots of sense. Read the comments too.

Noynoy doubts survey with Villar as most trusted

According to the Pulse Asia pre-election survey conducted from Jan. 22 to 26, Villar received the highest ratings of 70% as the most trusted presidential bet with Nonoy as second at 64%. But with Villar’s recent AFP regulations violation proves otherwise. Villar campaigned inside the AFP compound despite knowledge of AFP regulations which prohibits any political campaign inside the compound. Read more about this issue here.

There’s something fishy with this survey and perhaps, Noynoy smelled it too.

Why AFP is giving Villar a warning

This is what happened: Villar, Legarda and other NP bets went to the Intelligence Service of the AFP compound to visit Col. Ariel Querubin, another NP senatorial bet and detained at the ISAFP detention facility. They rode in vehicles that had campaign posters, did a “unity walk” and with raised hands up while reporters took photos, obviously not for souvenir but for the purpose of publicity. The Armed Forces has a regulations banning any political activity in all its camps. Did Villar violate these regulations?

Brawner said the unity walk violates standing regulations of the Armed Forces, which bans any political activity in all its camps. He said that while Villar and his party were allowed to visit Querubin, the AFP warned the NP that campaigning is not allowed inside the camp.

“Our officers at ISAFP tried to prevent [the unity walk] because it could have constituted something more than just the permission that was given to them. What happened was - [Villar's group] had their pictures taken and [ISAFP officers] could not prevent them (media) from taking pictures,” said Brawner.
The military spokesman said AFP chief Gen. Victor Ibrado has issued a warning to the Villar camp against repeating the incident. He said military guards at Camp Aguinaldo were also reminded to deny entry to vehicles bearing campaign materials.
“’The CSAFP (chief of staff, AFP) instructed that the group of Sen. Villar be warned against repeating such actions when they visit Col Querubin in the future. Moreover, the military police has been reminded to strictly implement the policy that no vehicles with campaign stickers or posters will be allowed inside the camp,” he said.
This is a bad example and only shows how Villar will lead this country if ever he becomes the president.
We’ll do everything so that Querubin would be allowed to campaign and present to the people his platforms and advocacies)," he said.

Was Villar really that poor?

Lito Banayo's opinion posted in Abante made a lot of sense:

At marami pang iba.

Is Villar copying Obama's flush with cash

Villar is not only copying Estrada's trademark color and slogan, he is also copying Obama's flush with cash using that as an advantage by spending billions in all forms of advertising. Villar can win in that manner just like how Obama won. Can we conclude then that anyone who is as rich as Villar can become president in the Philippines too?

Read Credible message, not volume or value, makes good ‘pol ads’.

HE has racked up nearly a billion pesos worth of TV ad spots, by network rate cards, in the last three months alone, but indications are that Nacionalista Party standard bearer Senator Manuel ‘Manny’ Villar Jr. can comfort himself that so far every centavo of that has been money well spent.

Indeed, campaign strategists and public-relations experts point to Villar’s ads as the major reason why he has been able to catch up with the frontrunner in the presidential race, Senator Benigno ‘Noynoy’ Aquino III, who has now challenged him to a one-on-one public debate.

Paid celebrity endorsers will be taxed by the BIR

MANILA, Philippines - The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) will go after celebrities endorsing or campaigning for candidates in the May 10 elections to make sure that they pay the proper taxes for such services.

“They get income for that so they should pay the tax,” BIR Deputy Commissioner for Legal and Inspection Group Gregorio Cabantac said.

He said campaigning or endorsing candidates is no different from other activities of celebrities, including product endorsements, hosting jobs and party appearances, which are all subject to income tax.

While admitting that some celebrities offer their services to candidates for free, Cabantac said this is not usually the case.

Asked how the BIR would be able to monitor such paid endorsements, Cabantac said the revenue agency would be fielding special teams during the election season. He also said that politicians should ask celebrities for receipts when paying them for endorsements.

No money, no win?

Data from media monitoring agency AGB Nielsen Media Research reveals that from November 1, 2009 to January 31, 2010, or just three months before the campaign period officially kicked off on February 9, the total advertising values for TV, radio, and print of just six of the 10 presidential candidates have already amounted to more than P2 billion. All I could say was "wow" that's a looooot of money for just three months. Take a closer look at this two tables and check here to read the full article.

Teodoro, Villar unsure about going after Arroyo if elected president

ABS-CBN reports:

Of the 8 contenders who participated in the ANC presidential youth forum held in De La Salle University in Manila, only Teodoro and Villar gave passive replies on whether they would hold Arroyo responsible for all her alleged misdeeds during her 9 years in office.
Teodoro is the administration’s candidate while Villar, who has allied himself with the opposition, is the standard-bearer of Nacionalista Party (NP).
Not a surprise at all because we know well that Teodoro is the Arroyo administration candidate and that Villar, apparently a coward leader, won’t perhaps face anything that has nothing to do with his business and wealth - and I can’t imagine how he will lead a country that has sank years ago from sever corruptions starting from the Marcos administration. Aquino stressed the need for “closure” on many issues and scandals that caused the people to loose confidence in our government. All the others said they would actively go after the outgoing president, who may face a deluge of cases--from corruption to human rights violations--when her term ends on June 30.

'Ninoy a hero, Villar a coward' - no comparison

Villar's quote in an exclusive interview with ABS-CBN News comparing himself with Ninoy Aquino shocked and irked many people including Ninoy's son, Noynoy and his camp.

"Villar should defend himself according to his own merits, and not by disparaging the untarnished memory of a national hero," a statement from Aquino campaign spokesperson Atty. Edwin Lacierda said.

"In the case of Ninoy, he was tried for his obstinate opposition to authoritarian and repressive rule, even in the face of certain death, while Villar is being asked to answer serious corruption charges and unethical conduct where the penalty is censure and retribution, a far cry from the death penalty imposed on Ninoy," Lacierda said.

"Ninoy was tried by a kangaroo court that was subject to the whims of a dictator while Villar was accorded every opportunity to defend himself in a democratic and transparent process which he repeatedly ignored," he added.

"There is simply no comparison; Ninoy is a hero. Villar is nothing but a coward," Lacierda said.

Aquino III also had some harsh comments for Sen. Arroyo, who served as executive secretary of the late former President Corazon Aquino.

Aquino III said that Sen. Arroyo today is different from the human rights lawyer and freedom fighter of the past.

Is voting for Erap Estrada a waste?

When Estrada announced his interest to run for president again after being convicted of plunder, the world was in disbelief. When he announced that he will indeed run for the position with him saying "this is the last performance of my life..." people around the globe were making fun of him taking his announcements as a stupid political joke. The Daily Inquirer's editorial tells us why:
At a time of great crisis, in the middle of a calamitous month, during a continuing emergency that has traumatized millions of Filipino families, pardoned plunderer Joseph Estrada formally declared his intention to contest the presidency anew. Why should the people vote for him again? Because, he said, “This is the last performance of my life and I will not fail you.”

The country is reeling from the devastation wrought by two catastrophic floods, and Estrada thinks the coming elections are about him and the movie of his life? The country is deeply anxious about the prospect of a Machiavellian extension of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s hold on power, and Estrada thinks the crucial 2010 elections are nothing but an opportunity to burnish his public image? The country is suffering from years of morale-sapping corruption scandals, and Estrada thinks the make-or-break elections of May 10 are merely about his own personal vindication, over his conviction in yet another morale-sapping corruption scandal?

It is difficult to shame a shameless, runaway ego, but we should do it anyway. For shame, Mr. Estrada.

It is clear that the Supreme Court will have to decide on the legality of Estrada’s bid for reelection; a suit before the high court is the only option. For the tribunal to take its time until after the elections is, of course, itself already a decision, but we are confident that, just as the high court acted on the citizenship case filed against presidential candidate Fernando Poe Jr. in 2004 with a real sense of urgency and great dispatch, the Supreme Court too will attend to the inevitable legal challenge with all deliberate haste.

Until then, we will have to suffer from Estrada’s insulting double-talk.

At the Plaza Amado Hernandez in Tondo, Manila, last week, before some 10,000 supporters, Estrada denied the very basis of his conviction two years ago on two charges of plunder. “I have not stolen a single cent from the country’s coffers,” he said, repeating a favorite line.

Technically, he has some basis for deluding himself. He was convicted on two counts: for centralizing the illegal numbers game of jueteng right in Malacañang, in the process pocketing over P545 million between November 1998 and August 2000; and for coercing the Social Security System and the Government Service Insurance System into buying stocks in the controversial Belle Corporation, in the process earning himself a commission of over P189 million. These acts of plunder did not directly involve “the country’s coffers.” Jueteng is illegal gambling “owned” by private sector financiers who are merely “protected” by government officials; the two insurance agencies are essentially independent institutions. But the public record, accessible to anyone who is the slightest bit interested, shows, beyond a doubt, that he did betray the public trust.

“If I had sinned against you,” he said at the political rally, “I would not have the nerve to stand before you.” This is not a test of probity or uprightness, only a measure of his nerve. After all, Estrada has said time and again that his “conscience is clear” when it comes to the issue of his many mistresses, his complicated families. (It was the mansions he built for his women, while he was living the high life as president, that first focused public indignation on his administration.) Indeed, the pivotal testimony of banker Clarissa Ocampo, that he had signed as Jose Velarde, he has not even dared to refute; he has only said that he was doing it on behalf of a crony—but his conscience was clear.

In Filipino, he also told his supporters in Tondo: “I swear to run in the coming elections so I can again be of service to the masses as president of the Philippines.” We have seen what service to the masses means, in Estrada’s world: the midnight Cabinet, the constant carousing that his chief of staff later deplored, the factionalism that divided his administration and sometimes paralyzed its decision-making processes, the voracious deal-making, the institutionalization of jueteng.

Now his supporters, including ex-senator Ernesto Maceda, grown old but still so much the same, are using the intellectually dishonest argument that the public should be allowed to decide on Estrada’s eligibility. Dishonest, because eligibility in a public vote is precisely the issue.

There is, truly, no shaming the shameless.

Villar speaks, Noynoy reacts

Ayon sa opinion ni Jojo Robles:
Here’s what Villar said last week, during a dinner in his honor held by the Manila Overseas Press Club, in reply to a question during an open forum regarding his own weaknesses: “I’m not perfect. [But] what I am just saying here is for all of my inadequacies [and] inefficiencies... when you look at me, you are looking at Manny Villar. What you see is what you get. You’re not looking at my mother, my father or the tycoon behind me. You are looking at Manny Villar.”

That was enough, apparently, for Aquino to throw a hissy fit when asked for a reaction during All Saints’ Day, as Ninoy and Cory’s accomplishment-challenged son was visiting his parents’ grave. “It’s true that he won both the Senate presidency and the speakership, but why did he keep losing them? Why can’t he get a running mate? Has he shown any portion of his platform despite the fact that he has been running for quite some time? He’s with the opposition... but as someone pointed out, when was the last time he criticized the present administration?” Aquino said.
